The Sheltering Africa project started in 2006 after we saw the conditions of the homes that some of the kids in our churches and schools were living in. Many of these kids are being raised by widowed mothers or grandmas because their parent(s) died from HIV (Aids), or other diseases. The housing conditions were that of a hut made out of thacth, straw, sticks, and plastic, roofs that were mainly made of our straw and sticks with no front door.. These 2 square meter (21sqft) huts are one room huts where the families are sleeping and cooking in the same area, causing many of these kids and their guardians to never having the opportunity to sleep in a real bed.

What we do through “Sheltering Africa” is we provide families with a dignified home made from concrete with a zinc (metal) roof. Each home costs us $2500 to build and comes with a wooden front door, two rooms, a lounge, and a pantry.

To be eligible, to receive a home through Sheltering Africa, each family has to meet the following requirements:

  • Must be a family that is either widowed
  • Orphaned children being taken care of by other relatives
  • A child with special needs or a disability
